Pike Fishing

Wild Pursuits Guiding

Float tube fishing for pike brings you closer to the action than ever before. A days float tubing with us will see you slowing floating down secluded waterways with only your friends and guide. The only thing to shatter this peaceful and enchanting place is a fired up predatory fish slamming into your fly or lure.

Fishing from float tubes is great because of the ultimate control it gives you and the freedom to search every last inch of the water. The tubes are extremely stable and very comfortable so it is no hardship to spend a full day in them. Normally the two biggest downfalls of the float tube are space and the speed to move around, but as your guide will be in a state of the art kayak both of these issues are eliminated.

Your guides kayak will hold all of the gear needed for a days float tube fishing and will also be able to give you a tow if you need one.
The guide will use his knowledge of the waters that we fish as well as the kayaks fish finder to put you onto some first class predator fishing.

What to expect

A typical day will have you meeting your guide by the water and going through the plan for the day and any questions you might have regarding how to operate the float tube.

We then ask that you travel with your guide to the place that you will end the day to drop off the guides vehicle, before returning with your guide in your vehicle to the start point. We use the vehicles like this so that there is no need to paddle in the float tubes against the flow, when the day is done the guide will simply load the gear into his vehicle and then drop you off back at your vehicle.

We use high quality float tubes and provide good quality foot fins to help you control yourself whilst in search of a trophy pike. At the start of the trip your guide will normally keep you quite close together with your fishing companion to get everyone up to speed with how to fish effectively.

Once you have got to grips with both the float tube and how best to fish the fly your guide will space you out a bit so that you can explore your own water. Your guide will then divide his time with each of you, answering questions, helping with gear changes, taking photos and obviously helping to land some angry pike.

As you will all be in ear shot of each other it is very easy for your guide to glide in the kayak between you giving help and advice without disturbing the fishing. After a couple of hours it is normal for the guide to help you onto the bank where you can get out of the float tube and have a elevenses provided by us and a chat about how the morning has gone so far.

Once out on the water again and fully refreshed it is time to put the mornings practice into full force. The takes from these fish can be breathtaking, sometimes they will grab the fly so hard it will nearly pull the rod out of your hands, other times a camouflaged body will strike from nowhere hitting the fly right at the rod tip and spraying water everywhere as you set the hook.

At lunch your guide will again help you to the bank for a bite to eat and some drinks. The wildlife that you see when quietly fishing these ‘out of the way’ places is truly amazing and it is quite common for our clients to witness things that they have never seen before.

The afternoon session is your chance to improve on everything that you have already experienced throughout the day, that can be the control of the float tube, casting and fishing the fly or hopefully catching the biggest fish of the day and a new PB for you.

We believe that these trips give some of if not the most enjoyable and rewarding fishing experiences that you can partake in British waters.

What to bring

If you are bringing your own rods and reels then we advise for casting weights of 8wt, 9wt and 10wt single handed rods with matching reels. The lines we use offer depending on the weather and how the fish are feeding. It is not uncommon for a float line a slow intermediate and a sink three line to be used all in the same day, if you don’t have this many set ups we can provide the extras on the day. We always have a good selection of flies and terminal tackle on the kayak but if you would like to use your own your are more than welcome. We recommend 30lb fluorocarbon or nylon mainline tipped with either 80lb fluorocarbon or 40lb wire bite trace. Flies should be four to ten inches in length and a good mix of natural and more vibrant colours in each size.

A good pair of non leaky waders is essential and under them a warm set of base layers is advisable. For your upper body layers are again the way to go with a decent wading jacket to keep any sudden down pours from causing an issue. Your guide will have ample waterproof storage on the kayak so it is a good idea to bring a few different items that can be kept with the kayak until needed. As with all fly fishing trips having polaroid glasses, hat and a buff will help you from sun, wind and keep you safe from flies during casting.

We provide full gear lists and Itineraries with booking confirmation but for more details please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
